05/25/2024 | Baseball
This will be UR's second time in three seasons, that UR had advanced to the A-10 Championship.
In the first semifinal game, VCU quickly jumped out to a 8-0 on Richmond in the first four innings and didn't look back.
Jack Arcamone scored on Jake Topolski's sacrifice fly to put the Spiders on the board in the seventh, down 9-1.
Richmond put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring six runs on four hits, a walk, a hit by pitch and a VCU miscue. Arcamone tallied the first run of the frame when he scored on Adian O'Keefe's base hit to centerfield.
Jackson Kraemer collected an RBI after drawing a walk and forcing in Toploski. Jason Shockley hit a pinch-hit two RBI base hit to center to make the score 13-5. In Arcamone's second at-bat of the frame, he found the right center gap to score two more runs, for a 13-7 final score.
With the loss to VCU, Richmond had a quick turnaround to face Saint Joseph's who eliminated George Washington earlier Friday.
The Richmond offense came out swinging in game two, scoring in all but two innings. Every Spider got at least one hit, paced by O'Keefe's career-high five hits.
Arcamone got the scoring going, bringing in Whitley on a ground out in the first. After doubling down the left field line, Jake Topolski scored on Whitley's base hit for the first run of the frame. With the bases loaded, DJ Pacheco forced in a run with a walk to put UR up 3-0.
With two outs in the third inning, O'Keefe and Connor Larson both crossed the plate on Whitley's three-run home run for a 6-1 lead.
O'Keefe pushed the Spiders lead to 8-1 with a base hit to left center to score Pacheco And Arcamone.
Pacheco launched his eighth home run of the season, with a two-run blast over the left field wall, giving UR a 10-3 lead after full five innings.
Kyle Roche (5-8) collected the win after tossing six full innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with one strikeout a walk and a hit batter. He handed the ball to Chase Topolski for a three inning save allowing two runs on three hits, with three strikeouts.
