Spider Baseball Extinguishes Rockets Offense

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team wrapped up the Central Virginia Challenge with a 5-1 victory over Toledo Sunday at Pitt Field to move to 9-2 on the season.
Richmond is back in action with two midweek contests. UR will host Towson Tuesday with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. Boston College will return to Pitt Field Wednesday for a second match-up this season, also with a 1:30 p.m. start. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
Richmond got on the board in the first inning when Brady O'Brien tallied a base hit to right field scoring Phil Bernstein. Bernstein doubled to reach and extend his hit-streak to nine games.
Toledo's only run came in the second inning, a solo home run to left off UR starter Jackson Hinchliffe.
The Spiders answered with two runs on three hits, a walk and one Toledo miscue in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Elko got the bats started with a base hit to left, advanced to third on Grant Kennedy before scoring on a Toledo error. Jordan Jaffe picked up the second run of the frame with a sharp base hit to right center, scoring Aaron Whitley from second.
After Hinchliffe retired the Rockets in order in the third, Brian Reinke took over on the mound. Reinke tossed three and a third of an inning of scoreless action. Toledo got one hit off him, then Reinke retired eight straight, including three strikeouts to get the victory.
Richmond added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Aidan O'Keefe scored on a ground out in the sixth. O'Brien picked up his second RBI of the game when Jaffe scored from second in the seventh.
Chayse Gruber tossed the final two and two-thirds of an inning, allowing only one runner to reach on an error, for Richmond.
