Spider Baseball Drops Series to Rhode Island

KINGSTON, RI – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped the Atlantic 10 Conference series finale to the University of Rhode Island, 12-9, Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Richmond, now 22-9 on the year and 5-7 in the league, returns to A-10 action Friday, April 11 to host UMass at 2 p.m. at Pitt Field.
The Spiders jumped to a three-run lead to start the game. Brady O'Brien singled up the middle, scoring Jordan Jaffe and Phil Bernstein. DJ Pacheco brought in O'Brien with an RBI-base hit of his own.
O'Brien hit his first of two solo home runs to push the Spiders lead to 4-0 in the third. Trevor Dosenbach extended the inning, driving in Michael Elko from second with a base hit before taking second on the throw home. Dosenbach then took third on a wild pitch and scored on the throw to first on a dropped third strike. Aaron Whitley pushed the Spiders lead to 7-0 with a solo home run for his sixth of the season.
Dylan Siesky made his first collegiate start, tossing two scoreless frames and facing one over the minimum as the Spiders opener. He struck out two and walked one in 29 total pitches.
URI got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on two walks, two hit by pitches and a wild pitch.
Richmond got a run back in the top of the fourth, when O'Brien launched his 11th home run of the season over the right field wall for an 8-3 lead.
URI started chipping away at the Spiders lead, tallying a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Jaffe scored Whitley on a sacrifice fly to right for the Spiders ninth run of the day. URI rallied in the bottom of the eighth to score five runs on four hits, a walk, and a Spider miscue to win the game.
