SHORT HOPS
Looking to remain in the hunt for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship, Richmond heads to No. 25 Charlotte this weekend for a showdown with the first-place 49ers. The series is underway Friday at 6 p.m.
The Spider Sports Network will carry live audio of the three-game series at RichmondSpiders.com and live stats will also be available. Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m., while Sunday's weekend finale is slated for 12 p.m.
The Spiders enter the weekend at 9-6 in the A-10 standings and in sole possession of fifth place, but just 2.5 games back of Charlotte. Richmond leads sixth-place Fordham by a full game, and the Spiders own key tiebreakers over teams currently in fourth (La Salle), seventh (Xavier) and eighth (St. Bona).
Sophomore Bret Williams gets the call on Friday and the lefty puts his 6-1 record (3-1 in the A-10) on the line. Williams ranks ninth in the league in overall ERA (3.00), while his 1.85 ERA in A-10 play is third-best. Williams has worked at least 6.0 innings in each of his five A-10 starts, and has gone 8.0 or more in four of the five.
Junior C/DH Chris Cowell continued his late-season tear last weekend, helping him earn his first career A-10 Player of the Week honor. Cowell hit .600 (six-for-10) with two doubles a homer, three RBI and three runs as the Spiders won their series over La Salle. In 11 A-10 games, the 2010 Second Team All-Conference pick is hitting a team-leading .429.
Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler, who has missed just three games in his college career, is already ranked seventh on Richmond's career RBI list (155) and is ninth on the Spiders' all-time at-bats list (763). With 232 hits, he needs just one more to crack the career top 10. He is two homers shy of eighth-place and three doubles shy of ninth. Among all active NCAA players, Mergenthaler's 155 career RBI are the 28th-most.
