09/16/2016 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Rivalries always bring out the best in competition. The University of Richmond field hockey team saw that on Friday as long-time rival and in-state foe William & Mary came to campus and dealt the Spiders a hard-fought 3-0 loss.
The Spiders (2-4) came out firing and tested the Tribe early, unleashing three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, but William & Mary (2-4) was able to turn them away and keep the game scoreless.
W&M's Cammie Lloyd opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finding the back of the cage to give the Tribe a 1-0 advantage.
Richmond continued to try and put pressure on the Tribe, drawing an extended corner at the end of the first half, but Kasey Gilbride's shot was knocked away to send the game into the break with W&M leading 1-0.
The Tribe extended that lead less than five minutes into the second half when Lloyd struck again to push the lead to 2-0.
Richmond wouldn't go away, drawing back-to-back penalty corners in the 46th minute, but W&M was able to turn away the Spiders and keep the game at 2-0.
Three minutes later, the Tribe added another goal to push their lead to 3-0.
As the clock winded down, Richmond looked to capitalize on six shots off penalty corners, but the Tribe defense denied each opportunity to close out the game.
Freshman Elise Zwicklbauer and Katrina Balatgek led the Spider offense as each had three shots in Friday's contest, while rookie Abby Lyons registered two shots both of which were on goal.
The Spiders will open Atlantic 10 play on Sunday at St. Francis (Pa.). That game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and a live stream will be available.
