02/26/2019 | Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. – Richmond baseball dropped its first game of the 2019 season Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Spiders went down 5-0 after three innings of play and couldn't piece together enough to make a comeback. Richmond falls to 6-1 on the season, while Duke improves to 7-1.
The Spider offense couldn't get going consistently Tuesday night, managing four hits. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.), Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) all connected on hits. Schulefand had the only extra-base hit, a double in the eighth, and Forte added the only RBI on a single in the fourth.
Freshman Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started his first game on the game on the hill. Marcus went 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, five runs, two earned and striking out five hitters while suffering the loss. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) was first out of the bullpen, going 3.1 strong innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three hitters. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) closed the game out, going 2.0 innings, scattering two hits and striking out two.
Duke jumped out to an early lead by virtue of a two-run homer from Michael Rothernberg in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Devils added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning, plating three runs by virtue of two Spider fielding errors.
The Spiders got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Plantier singled and went first to third after Cook singled into left center and advanced to second on the throw. Forte singled up the middle, but a diving play by the Duke second baseman limited the damage to just one run on the hit.
Richmond got another run back in the in the top of the eighth. Schulefand doubled to lead off the inning and stole third. The throw to try to get him at third sailed into left field allowing Schulefand to score and cut the lead down to 5-2.
Richmond returns to action this weekend as it'll host the Rider Broncos for a three-game series at Pitt Field.
