Baseball's In-State Win Streak Snapped at Liberty
04/09/2019 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders saw their five-game winning streak against in-state opponents come to an end Tuesday night against a very tough Liberty Flame team. Richmond fell by a 7-0 tally Tuesday night at the Liberty Baseball Stadium, and now drop to 16-13-1 on the season. Liberty, who is receiving votes in several nation-wide polls, improves to 25-7.
Richmond used six pitchers in the loss. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) got the ball to start, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing a run on two hits and struck out three. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) was first out of the bullpen, going a full inning with a strikeout. Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) faced two hitters before giving way to Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.). Olson worked the sixth inning, allowing a couple hits to go with a strikeout and surrendered two runs, one earned. Lowell Schipper (Santa Monica, Calif.) gave up two runs in his inning and Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) struck out a pair as he worked in the ninth.
The Spider offense struggled to find holes in the Liberty defense, putting together just 4 hits in the contest. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) finished with a career-high three hits in the contest, going 3-for-4. Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) added the other hit, a double in the top of the second.
Liberty pushed a run across in the bottom of the first inning. With the lead-off hitter reaching on a single and moving to second on a walk, Richmond got the ground ball it needed to try to turn a double play, but the relay throw got away allowing the run to score and put the Flames up early.
The Flames pushed four across in the sixth inning. A hit by pitch and a walk put two on before a bunt single scored one and a walk loaded the bases. Tyler Galazin doubled to center field to score a couple more and an errant throw brought in the fourth run of the frame to extend the lead to 5-0.
Liberty took advantage of a couple free passes to begin the seventh inning as the two walks that started the frame came around to score on a ground out and a single.
The Spiders are back in action this weekend as they head to Dayton for an Atlantic 10 series with the Dayton Flyers Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
