Plantier Homers in Loss at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Richmond baseball stepped out of Atlantic 10 Conference play to meet up with the No. 23 Florida State Seminoles and the winningest coach in college baseball history, Mike Martin in Tallahassee Friday night. The Spiders dropped the opener of the three-game series 8-2 at Dick Howser Stadium. Richmond falls to 25-20-1 on the season, while Florida State improves to 31-18 and Coach Martin earned his 2,019th win.
Five Spiders toed the rubber Friday night. Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) started the night and got the loss, going 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs, four earned and struck out three. Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Conn.) worked the next 2.0 innings, allowing a run to go with two hits and two strikeouts. Kent Morrison (Herndon, Va.) worked a third of an inning, striking out a hitter but giving up two earned runs. Matt Olson (Mableton, Ga.) struck out a couple hitters in his appearance before giving way to Sammy Senders (Potomac, Md.) Senders threw two scoreless innings in relief, sitting FSU down in order in the seventh and picking up a strikeout in the eighth.
The offense connected for five hits by five different players in the contest. Sage Bruhl (Northbrook, Ill.), Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas), Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) managed the hits for the Spiders. Bruhl finished the evening 1-for-4 with a run scored. Plantier was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and scored once. Schmidt, Hipsman and Cook each singled in the top of the ninth inning.
Florida State took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Reese Albert drew a lead-off walk and moved up on a ground out, Robby Martin drove a double to left field to bring in the first run. The Seminoles added another run when Matheu Nelson tapped a ground ball to third base but the throw to get him at first was wild, bringing in Martin to extend the lead to 2-0. FSU doubled up its lead in the in the second, getting an RBI sacrifice fly from Albert and an RBI single from Mike Salvatore. The Seminoles added another run in the bottom of the third on a solo home run from Matt Nelson to extend the lead to 5-0.
Richmond got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Bruhl drove a ground ball through the right side to get a runner on for Plantier who went the opposite way for a two-run home run to cut the lead down to 5-2.
FSU extended the lead back out to four in the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out, the Seminoles laid down a safety squeeze to score the run. The Seminoles added a pair of runs in the sixth and thanks to a couple walks and wild pitches.
The Spiders and Seminoles continue the series tomorrow afternoon at noon for the second-game of this three-game series.
