Baseball Drops Series at Florida State
05/11/2019 | Baseball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Spider baseball dropped the second game of the three-game nonconference series with the No. 23 Florida State Seminoles at Dick Howser Field Saturday afternoon. The Spiders dropped Saturday's contest by an 11-1 margin, falling to 25-21-1 on the season. Florida State improves to 33-18 with the win.
Freshman Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started the game, throwing the first inning, allowing two earned runs and a strikeout. Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) tossed the next inning and started the third, allowing four hits and six earned runs to go with a strikeout. Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) was the bright spot out of the bullpen, limiting Florida State to two runs in 4.0 innings and striking out six. Layne Looney (Dallas, Texas) worked the final two innings, allowing a run and striking out three.
The Spider offense went for six hits in the game, led by a 2-for-3 performance from Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.). Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.), Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) and Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) were the other three starters who collected hits and Justin Meyer (Villanova, Pa.) had a pinch-hit single in the top of the ninth.
Florida State took an early lead, plating a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. A one-out single and two walks loaded the bases in the first before a Matheu Nelson sacrifice fly brought in the first run. Another walk with the bases loaded put FSU up 2-0. In the second, a hit by pitch to the top of the FSU lineup put a runner on for Mike Salvatore who tripled off the wall in left field. A ground out to first base drove in the fourth FSU run of the afternoon, putting the Seminoles up 4-0.
FSU doubled its run total in the bottom of the third, opening the inning with a walk and three singles before an out was made. Three RBI singles drove in runs for the Seminoles who went up 8-0 after the third inning and the ninth run came in the fourth via a one-out single.
Richmond got on the board in the top of the sixth due to a couple FSU miscues. Schmidt reached on a catcher's interference and moved up after Hipsman drew a walk. Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) drove a ball to left field where the FSU left fielder misplayed the fly ball, allowing Schmidt to score.
Florida State answered with a solo run in the bottom of the frame on three singles.
Richmond and Florida State will finish the series tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. from Dick Howser Stadium.
