Miller Throws a Complete Game as Baseball Snaps Losing Streak
03/06/2020 | Baseball
Miller toed the rubber for the fourth time this season and earned the win. He threw all nine innings, scattering nine hits, four earned runs and struck out four. After giving up four runs through four innings, Miller didn't allow a run over the final five frames, and limited Fort Wayne to four base runners.
Seven of nine Spiders recorded multi-hit efforts. Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the charge with three hits apiece. Leckie drove in four runs as Cook drove in three. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) all drove in runs in the victory. All nine Spiders scored at least one run in the contest.
Purdue Fort Wayne got on the board first, plating a pair of runs in the first half inning. A lead-off single and a hit by pitch put two on. A sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position and a single through the left side brought the first run in and put runners on the corners. A safety squeeze brought in the second run to give the Mastodons the early 2-0 advantage.
The Spiders answered in the bottom of the frame. Schulefand dropped a single into left and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove a single to the right side to put runners on the corners. A hit by pitch loaded the bases for Leckie who dropped a single to center field to bring in a pair and knot the game at two.
The Mastodons regained the lead in the third after a lead-off double came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
Richmond answered in its half of the third, plating two runs. Blakely, Hipsman and Leckie all singled to start the frame, with Leckie driving in a run. Cook drove a fly ball to deep left field that landed just past the diving left fielder for a double to put the Spiders up 4-3.
Purdue Fort Wayne responded to tie it up in the fourth with a solo home run from the designated hitter, Alex Evenson.
Richmond exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding 10-4 lead. The Spiders started the frame with back-to-back walks before a bunt single loaded the bases. Cook drove a single down the third base line to drive in a pair before Mark Ready (Dallas, Texas) reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt attempt. Schulefand drove in a run with a single before Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky.) dropped down another bunt and reached on the fielder's choice. The throw to get the runner at third ricocheted off the Spider runner allowing him to score. Blakely drove in another run with a single and the Spiders were up 10-4 after five.
The Spiders went back to work after a quick top of the sixth, scoring a run on three hits as Ready drove a run in with a sacrifice fly. Two more Spider runs came around in the seventh as Toso and Blakely reached on a single and a hit by pitch before Hipsman doubled to drive in Toso. Blakely came in on a Leckie sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 13-4.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow as they take on the Ball State Cardinals at 4 p.m. at Shipyard Park.
