04/09/2022 | Baseball
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Richmond baseball team bounced back to get the split of the double header at Saint Louis University Saturday. In the first game, the Billikens (16-13, 3-2 A-10) picked up a 16-3 victory while the Spiders (14-13, 1-4 A-10) took game two, 8-5.
The final game of the series is set for a 1 p.m. eastern/noon central first pitch Sunday at the Billiken Sports Center.
Despite getting runners on in the top of the first and second, Saint Louis scored first in the second game, picking up a single run on one hit and a walk in the second inning.
Richmond answered in the top of the fourth, as Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) singled to left to score Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.), who led off the inning with a hit through the infield.
SLU added a run in the bottom of the fourth on one run, a walk and two hit by pitch. Spider starter Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) got out of a bases loaded situation with two strikeouts. Larson tallied seven strikeouts, while scattering two runs on three hits, two walks and three hit batters in four innings of work.
Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the Spider offense going in the fifth inning, with a base hit to left. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, Pa.) followed with a base hit of his own to push Toso to third. Elbeery picked up his second of three hits in game to score Toso and tie the game at 2-all. With two outs and two on, Jared Sprage-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) doubled in both to give the Spiders a 4-2 lead.
Saint Louis got one back in the top of the fifth, as reliever Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) allowed back-to-back hits. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) came in and struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
In the seventh, the Spiders got a base hit from Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) and back-to-back walks by Sprauge-Lott and Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to load the bases. Beal got an infield single to score Gersky to go back up by two, 5-3.
Argomaniz got tagged with a solo home run in the seventh, but worked around a base hit and a failed pickoff attempt to strand the SLU runner with the lead intact and collect his second win of the season.
In the top of the ninth, with two outs and two on, Mathes laced a single to left to score pinch runner D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) and push Beal to second. Toso was hit in the hand to load the bases. Hipsman hit a two run double to put the Spiders up 8-4.
Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) collected his first save of the season, tossing two innings in relief, allowing only a solo home run in the ninth and striking out one.
In the first game, Saint Louis jumped on Spider pitchers, tagging Richmond starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) with six runs on 10 hits in 2.2 innings pitched. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks in 2.1 innings of work. Matthew Haines (Mechanicsville, Va.) scattered two runs on four hits in two innings of work, while Jesse Heikkinen (Holt, Mich.) allowed two unearned runs on two hits.
Richmond loaded the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings, but finally broke through in the seventh. Shane Gipson (Chicago, Ill.) led off with a solo home run to left field to break up the shutout. After Beal was hit by a pitch, Mathes doubled him in. Mathes then scored on Hipsman's single to right field.
