KINGSTON, RI – The University of Richmond baseball team collected a 10-5 victory in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Bill Beck Field, but dropped the second game 20-1.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, a decision on the Atlantic 10 Conference series finale will be made Saturday morning.
In the first game, Richmond (22-8, 5-6 A-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After the first run came in on a wild pitch, Brady O'Brien doubled in two more runs with a hit down the right field line.
Rhode Island (17-13, 7-4 A-10) got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but UR starter Esteban Rodriguez got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Jack Arcamone pushed the Spiders lead to four runs in the second inning with a double to left center to sore Phil Bernstein and Jordan Jaffe, for a 5-1 lead.
The Rams got four runs off Rodriguez in the bottom of the third before being lifted for Ryan Bilka out of the pen. Rodriguez went two and two-thirds of an inning, allowing all five URI runs on five hits, two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch with two strikeouts.
Bilka got the win, now 5-2 on the season, working around three hits and two walks with six strikeouts of five and a third of an inning of scoreless action. Josh Willitts picked up two strikeouts as he retired the side in order in the ninth.
Connor Larson broke up the tied game in the fifth with a base hit through the right side to score Michael Elko and DJ Pacheco. Bernstein pushed Joey Wilga in with a sacrifice fly to center.
In the top of the eight, Brady O'Brien launched his ninth home run of the season to right field to make it 10-5.
IN game two, Rhode Island jumped on Richmond starter Gerry Peacock, tagging him for five runs on five hits, one walk and a hit batter with one strike out, going one-plus innings on the mound.
URI built up a 13-run lead when Trevor Dosenbach collected the Spiders first hit of the game in the top of the sixth. He then scored on Jaffe's double to right center for UR's only run of the contest.
URI tallied seven more runs on the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead 20-1.
