Spider Baseball Drops Series Opener to Wildcats

Richmond, 32-18 on the season and 13-15 A-10 action, will face Davidson, 24-26 on the year and 17-11 in league play, Friday for game two of the conference series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
After Davidson took a 3-0 lead in the first, Richmond answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Aaron Whitley reached base after getting hit then stole his 35th base of the season, matching the single season program record. Jordan Jaffe brought him in with a double down the right field line.
With two outs in the first, Brady O'Brien legged out a double to center to score Jaffe, then came home on Michael Elko's base hit through the right side to tie the game at 3-all.
Again in the second, the Spiders answered the Wildcats run in the top of the frame. Whitley drove in Joey Wilga, who led off with a base hit, with a sacrifice fly to center.
UR took the lead in the third on Jack Arcamone's solo home run, his 13th of the year, to right field. With two outs, Elko drew a walk and scored on D.J. Pacheco's seventh home run of the season to push the Spiders lead to 7-4.
Davidson got to UR reliever Chayse Gruber in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits. Gruber took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out three over two and two-thirds of an inning.
The Spiders were retired in order each of the final six innings of the contest.
Jason Shockley got the final out of the fifth then tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Brian Reinke took over in the seventh, retiring the Wildcats in order with two strike outs and a ground out. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk finishing his day after one and two-thirds of an inning of work.
Ryan Bilka tossed one and two-thirds of an inning of scoreless action, collecting two strikeouts.
