SHORT HOPS
With just two conference weekends remaining in the regular season, fifth-place Richmond plays host to Saint Louis at Pitt Field as the Spiders look to stay in the hunt for an A-10 Tournament berth. The series is underway Friday at 3 p.m.
The SLU series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes with the Spiders' regular-season home finale Sunday at 12 p.m. Richmond's Senior Day ceremonies will occur before Saturday's game. SpiderTV live video and Gametracker coverage is available for all three games.
The A-10 standings are log-jammed as eight teams find themselves within 3.5 games of the leaders Charlotte and Rhode Island. The Spiders are in four-way tie for fifth at 10-8 and have series remaining versus ninth-place Saint Louis (7-11) and 10th-place Saint Joseph's (6-12).
Through its first six A-10 series, Richmond has not faced a foe with a losing league record and the combined record of the Spiders' opponents is 72-42 in league play -- the toughest schedule thus far of any A-10 team.
Senior RF Mike Mergenthaler, who has missed just three games in his college career, currently leads the conference and is second in the nation with 10 outfield assists. As a club, the Spiders lead the A-10 with 16 outfield assists. Mergenthaler also leads the team in doubles (16), homers (6) and RBI (37), while his 158 career RBI ranks in the Top 30 among all active Division-I players.
Mergenthaler, who is currently tied for fifth on Richmond's career RBI list with Spider great and MLB all-star Sean Casey, is one of five seniors entering their final regular-season weekend at Pitt Field. Mergenthaler, Billy Barber, Matt Trent, Anthony Cafagna and Daniel Clark will be honored on Saturday's Senior Day.
Sophomore LHP Bret Williams has worked six innings or longer in each of his six A-10 starts (8.0+ innings three times) and puts his 2.73 overall ERA on the line Friday. Williams fired seven shutout innings and allowed three singles in last Friday's 3-0 victory at No. 25 Charlotte, which lowered his ERA in A-10 play to 1.57 -- the league's second-best.
Richmond has 16 comeback wins this year, including eight when trailing in the fifth inning or later.
